Crowns
The Diagnosis
Crowns are diagnosed when decay (cavities) or a fractured portion of the tooth is too extensive to place just a filling. We also almost always place a crown following a root canal. Crowns can also be used to alter the appearance of your teeth.
The Treatment
The first part of the treatment involves preparing the tooth for a crown. This consists of removing a portion of the tooth all the way around it so that a crown can fit over it. Then, if we are using our CEREC machine, we take a picture of the tooth with our camera and design the crown on the computer. A milling machine then creates the crown and it is cemented that day.
In other cases, we deem that a CEREC crown is not the best treatment. In these cases, an impression is taken, a temporary placed and the lab fabricates a crown.
